When feed conversion ratio changes, start with the period
Calculate a comparable period feed conversion ratio, check whether its records support comparison, and investigate what changed without treating one number as a cause.

Define the period before doing the division
Feed conversion ratio is simple to calculate and easy to misuse. A lower number can mean fish converted feed more efficiently. It can also reflect a different feed basis, feed that was distributed but not recorded, natural food in a pond, or a biomass estimate that does not match the time window.
For a bounded operating period, calculate: FCR = feed distributed during the period / fish biomass gain during the same period. If 120 kg of feed was distributed and the measured biomass gain was 75 kg, the period FCR is 1.60. This is a period result, not a verdict on the feed. FAO defines FCR as feed distributed divided by fish weight gain over the same period.[1]
Start with two dates or two clearly logged sampling events. Record the feed total between them, the opening biomass, and the closing biomass. Use the same unit for numerator and denominator. The calculation only works when feed and biomass gain describe the same fish population and interval.[1]
Call the result apparent FCR when fish can obtain food beyond the feed you recorded. In ponds, natural productivity can contribute to growth. FAO uses the term apparent FCR because a true feed-only conversion measure requires that no other food be available.[2]
Decide whether the comparison is valid
Before deciding that FCR improved or worsened, compare periods only when these fields are known:
Wet feeds carry more water than dry feeds, so their as-fed FCR values cannot be compared directly without a common basis. A pond's natural food can also make a low apparent FCR look better than the performance of the supplied feed alone.[2][1]
- species and production stage
- system type and production unit
- feed product and whether its mass is recorded on the same moisture basis
- opening and closing biomass method
- mortality, harvest, transfer, and count adjustments
- water conditions and any change in feeding regime
Investigate the number in the right order
First, audit the record. Confirm that feed deliveries, refusals, and feed events were entered once; that opening and closing biomass use a documented method; and that mortality, harvest, and transfers were included in the farm's stated biomass accounting method. A missing denominator or mismatched period makes the ratio uninterpretable.
Then look for an operating change inside that period. FAO identifies species, feed type, water quality, and natural food availability as factors that can change FCR. Feeding rate also matters. Its on-farm feeding guidance reports that, at the highest feeding rates, intake and growth can fluctuate, FCR begins to rise, and feed waste starts when feeding exceeds optimal intake.[1][3]
That is not a universal feeding instruction. Ask a narrower question: what changed in this farm's feed amount, feed product, fish stage, water conditions, or record quality before the ratio moved?
Operating standard
Use a comparison that can teach you something
Keep one FCR series for comparable batches or units. Record the feed basis, biomass method, sampling date, stock movements, mortality, water observations, and feeding exceptions beside each result. Compare like with like. Mississippi State University's catfish guidance defines FCR as feed divided by live-weight gain over an interval, while its reported values are specific to pond-raised catfish and their production context.[4]
If a period FCR moves, preserve the number before changing the ration. Then investigate the record and the conditions around that period. The calculation makes the next question specific. It cannot name the cause by itself.
